The original idea was, of course, a play on words based on "three's a crowd", which I came up with while sitting in a taxi going down TriBeCa. As I thought about it, it made quite a bit of sense: In New York, trees compete with pedestrians and stoops in every sidewalk, public parks are minimal and any empty lot is more likely to see a condo development sprout quicker than a shrub – hence, trees, in this city, can feel like a crowd. The wordsmithing also applies to this specific project, where the majority of entries will actually be trees, so I figured it would be nice to not do a tree and, staying in character, stand out from the crowd.
